Pesticides are substances widely used by farmers when growing produce.
This includes herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, and rodenticides, which are used to kill weeds, insects, fungus, and rodents, respectively. As for the herbicides in particular, they are being sprayed all over the crop in order to control pests and to stop the bugs from damaging the foods. Even though most farmers do release these toxic chemicals without any bad intention, the use of pesticides can wreak havoc to our health due to their high content of toxic chemicals. Annually, thousands of Americans are poisoned by pesticides. For example, in the period between 2000 and 2008, 7,600 cases of pesticide poisoning were reported just in California alone.
Pesticides have been associated to a wide array of health hazards, from short-term effects like nausea and headache to chronic impacts like endocrine disruption ( which may produce infertility and various of birth defects and developmental defects) reproductive disorders, and even cancer. According to a study by the National Cancer Institute, American farmers exposed to pesticides had higher incidences of Hodgkins disease, non-Hodgkins lymphoma, leukemia, and other cancers.
In addition to this, it has been scientifically shown that pesticide residues on fruits and veggies may increase a child`s risk of attention hyperactivity disorder, known as ADHD, a condition manifested by impulsivity and hyperactivity in children.
Needless to say, apart from the health hazards it causes, pesticide use can also damage the agricultural land by affecting worms, beneficial insects, and soil microorganisms, which in turn compromises soil`s health.
HOW TO PROTECT FROM PESTICIDE POISONING?
Organic foods are the best preventative measure against dangers associated with pesticide use. Instead of being sprayed with pesticides, organic foods are grown with all-natural fertilizers, which don’t contain any harmful chemicals. Multiple studies have shown that the consumption of organic foods allows us to get the maximum benefits of the antioxidants that many fruits and veggies naturally contain.
The foods that have amazing antioxidant properties:
Both lemon fruits and their peels are packed with antioxidants. They even have a higher amount of antioxidants than vitamin E. These antioxidants will keep your cells healthy and protect them from free radicals and cancer-causing damage. Another ingredient that contains many antioxidant properties is Turmeric. This amazing medicinal plant boosts the immune system, provides strong anti-inflammatory properties, controls the cholesterol levels in the blood, lowers the risk of stroke and protects from coronary artery disease. Also, we should not forget carrots, apples and ginger root, ingredients that are packed with a wide array of vitamins and minerals, all of which are essential for our well-being.
